Job Description & Responsibilities:

Our client is one of the industry leaders in the Southern Africa safari market with a significant and growing presence in Botswana.  In addition to developing new properties our client is also undertaking an exciting and committed rejuvenation program, upgrading a number of existing properties in their quest for luxury and exceeding customer expectations.

This property is currently in the final stages of a refurbishment and design program and will creatively combine new and contemporary features with the traditional. 

On behalf of our client HIH is currently looking for an experienced Head Field Guide.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, in your role as Head Guide, you are primarily responsible for the safety and well-being of Lodge guests whilst providing memorable wildlife viewing experiences before, during, and after game drives.

Further role specifics and responsibilities are given below;

  • Managing your team of guides to provide full support and knowledge for guests for up 3 game drives per day, across multiple vehicles
  • Ensuring the absolute safety of your guests, your team, and yourself at all times regardless of the situation and guest demands
  • Be willing to share knowledge and awareness to guests with differing command of English Language, displaying patience and professional courtesy at all times
  • Vehicles – ensuring all vehicles are maintained and equipped in accordance with industry standards at all times, including communication equipment
  • Proactively but diplomatically communicate conservation to guests and the value of looking after wildlife
  • Administer first aid or other remedial treatment should guests become unwell during the drives
  • Promptly and clearly communicate back to the lodge should any guests become unwell or become cause for concern for any other reason
  • At all times act as an Ambassador both to the Company but also to wildlife and conservation in general
Candidate Requirements
  • Registered as a field guide with DEAT and THETA or equivalent
  • Comfortable living in remote area for extensive periods of time
  • 3-5 years work experience as a guide either in S Africa, Botswana, Namibia, of which 2 years should be as Head Guide
  • Excellent judgment and decision making skills with the ability to ensure guest safety whilst still providing unforgettable experiences
  • Valid driving license
  • Up to date vaccinations
  • Valid first aid certificate from accredited facility/body
  • Calm, measured, professional demeanor and personal appearance
  • Ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining focus on priorities
  • Passionate about training and developing others in your team
