Job Description & Responsibilities:

Our client is a major global cruise operator with a distinct working culture and shipboard environment.  With a truly multi-national crew and passenger demographic they are currently in the next phase of their strategic growth and expansion program capturing smaller exclusive vessels as well as much larger 3000+ passenger tonnage.

On behalf of our client HIH is looking for the right candidates to fill a number of exciting positions.

We currently require a suitably experienced shipboard Human Resources Director. Reporting directly to the Captain and with an initial team of 4 you will assume overall responsibility for the seamless human resource function onboard the ship. You will act as a business partner to the Captain and other senior officers to enable optimum shipboard operations through interdepartmental cooperation. 

Further specific duties and responsibilities are as follows;

  • Lead the day to day human resource operations. This includes employee relations; compensation and benefits; recruitment; training and development; performance management
  • Communicate and reinforce human resource policies and legislation to all department heads. This includes both company policies as well as local legislation
  • Assist department heads with any staff/crew disciplinary matters and grievances and resolve with minimal disruption to vessel operations
  • To ensure crew manifest is accurate and up to date
  • Design and implement crew retention strategies workable across the fleet
  • Develop working relationships with trade union representatives as well as ITF
  • To prepare and review human resource handbook in order to maintain relevance
  • Maintain visa and work permit registers of all crew members ensuring that they remain valid throughout the voyage
  • Proactively engender the company working culture across all crew members and officers
  • Prepare and present weekly HR reports to Captain and other HOD’s
  • To assist crew member with regards personal emergencies whilst onboard the vessel and to act as a source of support and confidence
  • Support and hold an indirect line of communication with assigned shore based HQ Human Resource manager
  • Contribute to Senior Management weekly meetings
  • Assist Captain and department heads to ensure work/rest compliance
Candidate Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management or other suitable subject
  • Minimum 6 years in Human Resource roles, 2 at a senior management/supervisory level
  • Working knowledge of USCG (United States Coast Guard); Trade Union; ITF (International Transport Workers Federation); Port State Control regulations pertaining to the human resources function and their impacts
  • Ability and personal circumstances that allow up to 4 months away at a time
  • Confident , engaging personality
  • Ability to clearly communicate and articulate thoughts with a multitude of audiences and nationalities
  • Full buy-in to the company brand and what is stands for and to communicate that to all heads of department
  • Good cross-cultural skills and able to maintain composure in the most demanding of situations
  • Passionate about training and developing others
